With a name like The Rumours Are True, it’s no surprise this Newport salon is known for its vibrant energy, dedicated team, and strong sense of community. At the helm is Loz Main, who’s been running the show for 13 years with a team of 15 passionate staff. We spoke with Loz about building a business with heart, the power of planning, and what keeps her inspired in the industry she loves.
We caught up with Loz Main, here’s what she shared about success
What do you love most about being in the hair and beauty industry?
The connections. We get to bond with people, make them feel amazing, work alongside a team of incredible humans, and be creative every day. What more could you want?
How would you describe your salon culture?
We’re fun, supportive, and high-performing. We plan ahead, we celebrate each other, and we genuinely enjoy working together. That culture didn’t just happen by chance, though. We’re intentional about it.
We plan the fun just like we plan our numbers, because we know how important both are for a thriving team.
What’s something you do in your business that has made a big difference?
Focusing on our numbers before the week even begins. Too many salon owners only look at the numbers at the end of the week and wonder what happened. For us, forecasting and planning in advance is everything. It helps us stay in control and drive results rather than reacting to them.
What’s your favourite Kitomba feature?
I absolutely love the Scoreboard. We use it constantly to track our performance and set clear goals. Being able to forecast and have visibility in real time is a game changer. The Targets feature also saves us heaps of time. It’s an essential part of how we operate.
What numbers do you keep a close eye on?
Total sales, retail, average spend and upsell percentage. Those are the core ones for us. They give us a really clear picture of how we’re doing individually and as a team.
What’s your number one tip for salon success?
Your vibe attracts your tribe. The energy you bring as a leader sets the tone for your team and your clients. Be the kind of business you want to attract, and success will follow.
What’s something you wish you had done earlier in your career?
Celebrated myself more. We’re so tough on ourselves as business owners. It’s easy to just keep chasing the next goal without acknowledging how far you’ve come. I wish I’d paused more often to recognise the wins, big and small.
What’s your go-to drink order?
Depends which version of Loz you’re hanging out with! It’s either a skinny cappuccino or a tequila.
How do you like to unwind after a busy day?
There’s nothing better than taking off my makeup, jumping into comfy pajamas and cuddling my babies. That’s my reset button.
Heels or flats in the salon?
Flats for sure! Comfort is key when you’re on your feet all day.
What’s currently on your salon playlist?
Unfortunately… Taylor Swift. She’s on repeat whether we like it or not!
What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?
Vanilla with Ice Magic. Can’t beat the classics.
What do you love most about leading a team?
Watching people grow and thrive. Helping my team members reach their goals, whether personal or professional, is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Their success is my success.
If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice as a new salon owner, what would it be?
Trust yourself more. I used to second-guess every decision. But your instincts are usually right. Back yourself, and don’t be afraid to do things your own way.
